The short version
- On TradingView's free Basic plan, Bar Replay works fully on daily and higher timeframes — all available history.
- Intraday Bar Replay (1-minute, 5-minute, etc.) is not on the Basic plan at all — it starts at the paid Essential tier.
- The Basic plan is also capped at 1 chart per tab and 2 indicators per chart, which limits how much you can look at while replaying.
- FreeBacktest replays real Binance, OKX and Bybit crypto candles bar by bar, with history back to January 2020 on the longer timeframes. The free plan has limits of its own (shorter history on intraday charts, 30 backtests a day); Pro and Elite are listed but cannot be bought yet.
01 What Bar Replay actually does
Bar Replay turns a live TradingView chart into a rewindable one. You pick a starting point in the past, and the chart reveals candles after that point one at a time — either by stepping forward yourself or letting it play automatically at a chosen speed. The point is to practice reading and reacting to price without already knowing what the next candle does, which a static chart you're scrolling through can never really give you.
02 What the free Basic plan actually includes
TradingView's own plan comparison splits Bar Replay in two, by timeframe. On daily and higher timeframes — daily, weekly, monthly — the free Basic plan gets the same full history that's already on the chart, same as every paid plan. On intraday timeframes, the Basic plan has no allowance listed at all; the intraday rows in the comparison table start at the paid Essential tier.
| Plan | Daily & higher | Intraday (1-minute, etc.) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (free) | All available history | Not included |
| Essential | All available history | ~6 months of 1-minute data, scaling up with the interval |
| Plus | All available history | ~1 year of 1-minute data, scaling up with the interval |
| Premium / Ultimate | All available history | All available history |

In practice, that means a free Basic account can fully bar-replay a daily or weekly crypto chart back through however much history TradingView has for that symbol — no time limit shown for that part. What it cannot do is replay an intraday chart, like a 1-minute or 5-minute chart, at all.
03 What requires a paid plan
Any intraday replay
Stepping through 1-minute, 5-minute or other sub-daily candles in Bar Replay requires at least the Essential plan, which is TradingView's cheapest paid tier (listed at $12.95/mo billed annually, checked September 2026). Essential gives roughly six months of 1-minute data, scaling to more months as the interval gets larger; Plus roughly doubles that; Premium and Ultimate remove the intraday limit entirely (source, checked September 2026).
Tick-by-tick replay
Replaying every individual trade rather than completed candles is an Ultimate-only feature, and even then it only reaches 7 days back from the current time (source, checked September 2026).
Charts and indicators while you replay
Separate from Bar Replay itself, the Basic plan's general chart limits also apply during a replay session: 1 chart per browser tab and 2 indicators per chart, versus more of both on every paid tier (plan comparison table, checked September 2026). The Basic plan itself is free forever with no credit card required to start (TradingView pricing, checked September 2026) — the limits above are specifically about what you can do once you're on it.
04 A free way to bar-replay crypto history
FreeBacktest takes a different approach to the same idea. It's a free, browser-based crypto bar-replay backtesting tool: it replays real Binance, OKX and Bybit candles, bar by bar. On the free plan the depth depends on the timeframe: the whole history back to January 2020 on 3-day, weekly and monthly charts, about a year on daily, and roughly the last 17 days on 1-hour and 67 days on 4-hour. Paid Pro and Elite plans reach further back, but checkout isn't open yet.
Each replay session gives you a $10,000 virtual balance to paper-trade against the candles as they reveal, using market and limit orders with stop-loss and take-profit levels attached. Every simulated trade lands in an automatic trade journal that tracks win rate, P&L and risk:reward, so you don't have to keep your own spreadsheet — the risk:reward calculator and position size calculator are there if you want to check a target or a position size by hand before you place the trade. If you want to replay the same chart with someone else, FreeBacktest's shared backtest rooms let you do that live, together.
05 How to run a bar-replay session
- Open the app to start a replay session.
- Pick an exchange and pair (Binance, OKX or Bybit), choose a timeframe, and set your starting date. On the free plan the depth depends on the timeframe: the whole history back to January 2020 on 3-day, weekly and monthly charts, about a year on daily, and roughly the last 17 days on 1-hour and 67 days on 4-hour.
- Step forward through the candles one at a time, the same core idea as TradingView's own Bar Replay.
- When a setup appears, place a market or limit order against your $10,000 virtual balance, with a stop-loss and take-profit attached.
- Keep replaying candle by candle — your entry, your stop and your target all trigger against that candle's actual range, not with hindsight.
- When the session's done, check the automatic trade journal for the win rate, P&L and R:R across everything you just traded.
